LAS VEGAS (AP) — Dan Wheldon’s death has Sam Schmidt thinking about leaving the sport he loves.

Speaking from his go-kart facility not far from The Strip, Schmidt says Wheldon’s death in Sunday’s race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway has taken a huge emotional toll.

Schmidt has gone through a month of highs and lows with his self-owned team, starting with the sudden death of Indy Lights team manager Chris Griffis last month.

Sam Schmidt Motorsports won the Indy Lights season title with Josef Newgarden at Kentucky two weeks ago, then helped Victor Carbone to his first race win at Las Vegas on Saturday.

Wheldon died the next day of head injuries from a fiery 15-car crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Schmidt made his remarks on Monday.
