WENATCHEE, Wash. (AP) — As pay phones disappear from streets in north central Washington, they end up in the basement of Interwest Communications in Wenatchee.

The Wenatchee World reports (http://bit.ly/rqLLW7) it’s a graveyard for hundreds of old phone booths.

The vendor has fewer than 200 payphones remaining in operation and it expects to uninstall another 20 percent this year.

Pay phones have to collect about $150 a month to pay for themselves. Officials say the remaining pay phones are at convenience stores, gas stations and transit areas.
