WASHINGTON (AP) — A single senator has used a procedural maneuver to put the brakes on a Senate committee hearing about the education law known as No Child Left Behind.
Sen. Rand Paul complains that he’s only had since Monday to review an 800-page bill that would overhaul the Bush-era law.
The legislation is the result of a bipartisan agreement between the Democratic and Republican leaders of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee.
Paul says the bill keeps too much federal control over education, so he found a way to halt the hearing after more than an hour.
The Kentucky Republican cited a Senate rule that says a committee can’t have hearings when the Senate is in session. That rule is usually waived.
