GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — University of North Dakota President Robert Kelley says retiring the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo will cost about $750,000.

That does not include the cost of changes that might occur at the privately held Engelstad Arena on campus.

Kelley sent the estimates last week to an official with the North Dakota Legislative Council. The biggest chunk of the estimate is $575,000 to develop a new moniker and logo.

State lawmakers are scheduled to meet in November to vote on repealing a law requiring the school to keep the nickname, which the NCAA finds offensive. The NCAA has threatened sanctions against UND unless the school dumps the name.

State Rep. Mike Schatz of New England opposes retiring the name and says he wants lawmakers to know how much it will cost.
