Bend paper sues DA in job records request

BEND, Ore. (AP) — The Bulletin newspaper in Bend has sued Deschutes County District Attorney Patrick Flaherty for records of the job applications of two lawyers he hired in July.

The paper (http://bit.ly/rVmJ7O ) reported it first asked for the applications in July, and Flaherty has twice rejected the requests. It went to court Wednesday.

Bulletin Editor-in-Chief John Costa says the public has an interest in knowing the backgrounds of the two, and the information is clearly a public record.

Flaherty told the paper he would reconsider his refusal if The Bulletin’s reporters ask to interview the two lawyers and are turned down or think they get inaccurate information.

He said the records are exempt from disclosure under Oregon law, but didn’t cite a statute in support.
