TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A man accused of killing an Ohio schoolgirl in 1967 after holding her captive in his basement for days has been convicted of murder.

Jurors found Robert Bowman guilty on Friday in the killing of the 14-year-old who disappeared on her way home from school in Toledo. Her body was found weeks later wrapped in a rug in a southern Michigan field.

Another jury in August had failed to reach a verdict in the case that forced a retrial.

Police didn’t connect Bowman with the killing until the early 1980s when his former wife told investigators she had seen the girl tied up in their basement. But her story wasn’t enough to bring charges.

Police finally charged Bowman five years ago when they say DNA linked him to the killing.
