YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) — Two Yakima girls won first and second place in a Halloween costume contest by dressing up as La Catrina, a figure from the Day of the Dead or Dia de los Muertos Mexican holiday in which people remember the dead.

The legend of La Catrina is that she was a selfish, rich woman who did nothing to help the poor and is mocked each year through costumes.

The 13- and 12-year-old girls, Adilen De Los Reyes and Jazmin Santos, wore ghoulish face paint and aristocratic clothing to win Sunday’s contest at the Yakima Farmer’s Market.

The Yakima Herald-Republic reports (http://bit.ly/tx9KVZ) the contest was part of an annual event organized by the Yakima-Morelia Sister City Association.
