Everett Council members miss a lot of meetings

EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — The Everett City Council has no formal attendance policy. Every absence is excused. But The Daily Herald (http://bit.ly/sHtcoa ) reports those absences are starting to add up.

Since January 2010, at least one member has been missing from 80 percent of the Everett City Council meetings.

The city charter says a council member who has three unexcused absences could be dismissed.

But in the past two years, no council members have received a single unexcused absence, because most of the absences have been for family reasons, or work conflicts or illness. One council member has missed about a third of the meetings, mostly because of an ill family member.

It’s a part-time job, but members do get paid. And some candidates appear to be making attendance a campaign issue in Everett.
