Schlechter leads Georgia State past Clark Atlanta

ATLANTA (AP) — Bo Schlechter, filling in after Georgia State’s top two quarterbacks were suspended, threw three touchdown passes to help the Panthers’ open their second season with a 41-7 victory over Clark Atlanta on Friday night at the Georgia Dome.

Schlechter, normally the punter and wide receiver, connected with Jordan Giles on a 12-yard TD pass for a 24-0 halftime lead, then hit Albert Wilson 30- and 48-yard TD strikes in the second half. The sophomore was 13 of 18 passing for 196 yards.

Donald Russell had touchdown runs of 20 and 3 yards in a 1:04 span early in the second quarter after interceptions by Demazio Skelton and Robert Ferguson. Freshman Christian Benvenuto kicked field goals of 44 and 45 yards for Georgia State, 6-5 in its debut season a year ago.

Clark Atlanta’s touchdown came on Bryan Mann’s 34-yard pass to Terrence Milton on the first play of the fourth quarter.
