A 4-year-old Vancouver girl’s condition improved to serious in a Portland hospital Monday after she nearly drowned about 5 p.m. Sunday at Klineline Pond at Salmon Creek Park.

Fire District 6 spokeswoman Dawn Johnson said she is calling Legacy Emanuel Medical Center daily to check on the girl’s condition.

Jaime Pina, 34, of the Rose Village neighborhood spotted the girl face-down in the water and he pulled her to shore, said Dawn Johnson with Fire District 6. Another person performed CPR on the girl.

The child, whose name was not released, was taken to Legacy Salmon Creek Medical Center, then transferred to Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, where she was listed in critical condition Sunday night.
