DEIR EL-BALAH, Gaza Strip (AP) — The militant group Islamic Jihad says one of its armed men has been killed and another wounded in an explosion in the central Gaza Strip.

Islamic Jihad spokesman Abu Ahmad says the car in which the men were traveling was hit by an Israeli airstrike. The Israeli military said it was checking the report.

Islamic Jihad men who congregrated outside the hospital in Deir el-Balah late Wednesday said the militant had been involved in launching rockets.

Israel regularly targets Gaza militants responsible for firing rockets. Militants have dramatically increased their arsenal and now threaten major urban centers in Israel’s south.

Islamic Jihad is a small faction in Gaza, ruled by the more powerful militants of Hamas.
