SEATTLE (AP) — Democrats say President Barack Obama’s job plan will retain jobs for 8,500 teachers and first responders and create about 15,000 jobs in transportation and school maintenance projects in Washington state.

The estimates provided by Senate Democrats Friday say that 150,000 Washington state businesses would see a payroll tax cut as well.

Obama unveiled his $447 billion plan in a televised joint session of Congress on Thursday as he tries to revive a stalled U.S. economic recovery.

Republicans were lukewarm at best on the proposal.

Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers says her constituents want less government spending.
