ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Red Sox manager Terry Francona says infielder Kevin Youkilis has returned to Boston to be examined by team doctors and undergo an MRI exam.

Youkilis was out of the starting lineup Friday for the start of a key series against Tampa Bay because of a hip injury.

The Red Sox held a 612-game lead entering Friday over Tampa Bay in the AL wild-card race.

The teams are playing a three-game series this weekend.
