TOKYO (AP) — The Japanese Olympic Committee says Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara will be appointed chairman of the city’s 2020 bid committee, while JOC president Tsunekazu Takeda will oversee the day-to-day operations of the bid activities.

Ishihara was the driving force behind Tokyo’s failed bid to host the 2016 Olympics, which were awarded to Rio de Janeiro.

Rome, Madrid, Tokyo, Istanbul, Doha, Qatar, and Baku, Azerbaijan are competing to host the 2020 Olympics. The IOC will select the host city by secret ballot in Buenos Aires on Sept. 7, 2013.
