DOVER, Del. (AP) — Nick Elko and Darius Jackson connected on a 13-yard touchdown with 35 seconds left to give Delaware State a 31-27 victory over Shaw on Saturday night.

The Hornets (2-0) trailed 24-6 with 14:45 left in the third quarter before mounting a comeback. After Jaashawn Jones’ 4-yard run made it 24-16 just 3 seconds into the fourth quarter, the Bears of Division II made it an 11-point game, 27-16, on a field goal.

Elko then took over, leading an 80-yard drive on eight plays, resulting in an 8-yard TD pass to Jackson to make it 27-24 with 5:10 remaining.

The Hornets had a chance to tie it, but Mitchell Ward missed a 35-yard field goal with 1:01 to play. On Shaw’s ensuing drive, running back James Langford fumbled and Delaware State’s Olusegun Ayanbiola recovered it on the Bears’ 13-yard line.

After an incomplete pass, Elko then hit Jackson for the winner.
