Battle Ground — Businessman, philanthropist and Rotarian Al Jubitz will visit the Battle Ground Community Center this week to talk about Rotary International and world peace.
“Advancing World Peace Through Rotary” is the topic of the free talk he’ll give at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Battle Ground Community Center, 912 E. Main St.
Jubitz retired as co-chairman of his family’s transportation services and truck-stop business, Jubitz Corp., after a 34-year career. In 2001 he created the Jubitz Family Foundation, which supports local nonprofit agencies working on early childhood education, environmental preservation and world peace.
He’s particularly interested in the island of Cyprus, where a United Nations-patrolled buffer zone separates Greek and Turkish Cypriots. “If we can create peace in Cyprus, we probably have all the ingredients for doing it in the Middle East,” he said.
Jubitz, 66, is a native Oregonian, a graduate of Beaverton High School, Yale University and the University of Oregon. A third-generation Rotarian, he has pledged $300,000 for five Rotary World Peace Fellowships. He received the Rotary Foundation’s 2010 Distinguished Service Award.
