PESHAWAR, Pakistan (AP) — Police say gunmen have attacked a school bus in northwestern Pakistan, killing three children, a teacher and the driver.

The attack Tuesday took place in Matani, close to the main city of Peshawar.

Police officer Qayum Khan says the bus was taking students home when the gunmen struck.

Matani has been the scene of a vicious struggle between Islamist militants with bases in the nearby Afghan border region and government-backed tribal armies.

The militants have attacked civilian targets in the area to punish its residents for not supporting them.
