Chuck Bettis (not pictured) raise the American flag to half-mast in front of the Camas Public Library Sunday morning, in recognition of the 10-year anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
Camas Fire Department engines blocked off Northeast Fourth Avenue, between Everett and Franklin streets during the remembrance event. During a speech, Camas Interim EMS Capt. Cliff Free recognized the 418 firefighters and police officers who died as a result of the terrorist attacks. That day “they knew only of their duty,” he said of the fallen heros. “Their duty to place the suffering of others above that of their own.” Nearly 3,000 people including military personnel and civilians — men, women and children — were also killed that day.
