Washington State University on Monday reported record fall semester enrollment, including a new high at its Vancouver branch campus.

WSU has registered 27,008 students at the system’s four campuses, an increase of nearly 4 percent from last year.

The jump reflects a significant spike (27 percent) in this fall’s entering freshman class, at 4,473 the largest such group in WSU history.

Locally, WSUV enrollment reached 3,143 total students, part- and full-time. That’s nearly a 1.5 percent increase from fall 2010. Leading the surge were 625 new transfer students, the largest number entering the Salmon Creek campus in the past 11 years, officials said.

There were 182 new freshmen registered at WSUV, with an average grade point of 3.39, officials said. Of those, 96.7 percent are Washington residents, the school reported.

Systemwide, 85 percent of all WSU new freshmen are from the state of Washington.
