Letter: While unions battle, they all lose

Regarding the labor dispute over a grain terminal at the Port of Longview, the longshoremen are letting their muscles get ahead of their brains:

Hundreds of union members “capture” six guards during recent protests.

Union “A” vs. union “B” over the contracted jobs — huh?

Public support will go to the guards.

In the 1930s, longshoremen in Seattle stopped movement of U.S. mail by taking on a small group of Marines. Bad move: Marines are American heroes.

About 50 years ago, West Coast longshoremen negotiated contracts opening ports to containers and automation, showing real leadership that should still be present. Get things settled; the courts are about to step in.
