SAO PAULO (AP) — The Brazilian government is optimistic about the pace of preparations for the 2014 World Cup despite its own report indicating many projects have not begun.

A report Wednesday indicates that work on improving transportation infrastructure hasn’t started in half of the host cities, and airport renovations will not be completed in time for the 2013 Confederations Cup.

With nearly 1,000 days left until the World Cup, government officials are downplaying concerns about preparation delays.

The government says all airport upgrades will be completed in time for the World Cup. However, none will be fully ready before the Confederations Cup, the warmup tournament for the World Cup.
