EAST HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma says the only way the Huskies will win a national championship this season is if some other team “screws up.”
Auriemma told a gathering of business leaders in East Hartford on Wednesday that he believes Notre Dame, Tennessee and Baylor should be the favorites for the title, because they each return a veteran group of players.
Auriemma says he’s excited to see who on his young team will step up following the graduation of Maya Moore, the two-time national player of the year. Moore led UConn to four straight Final Four appearances and two national championships.
Auriemma says the key to his team’s success may be the play of guard Caroline Doty, who sat out last season with a knee injury.
