Hungary makes name change on Olympic uniforms

BUDAPEST, Hungary (AP) — The uniforms of Hungarian athletes at the 2012 London Olympics will say “Magyarorszag,” the country’s name in its own language, instead of “Hungary.”

Hungarian Olympic Committee Secretary General Zoltan Molnar told The Associated Press on Thursday that officials have already seen the new uniforms made by Adidas and will be presented soon in public.

Molnar says the committee acted on fans’ requests. Similar steps were taken recently by other Hungarian sports groups, including the national ice hockey team.

Hungary adopted a new constitution in April in which the country’s official name was shortened — in Hungarian — from “Republic of Hungary” to “Hungary.” Hungary’ president, Pal Schmitt, is a former chairman of the Olympic Committee.
