ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — An Astoria man has been sentenced to 30 years for beating his girlfriend to death.

The Daily Astorian reported (http://bit.ly/pwnQCc ) that after a plea bargain Judge Phil Nelson sentenced 40-year-old Christopher Fitzhugh for assault and murder by abuse in the death last year of 43-year-old Evelyn Decker.

An autopsy showed Decker was severely beaten, with 14 fractured ribs, bruises over her body, a collapsed lung and severe brain swelling.

Prosecutors say Decker was beaten twice in the days before she died, and Fitzhugh denied her medical care, once telling 911 dispatchers when she tried to call that there was no emergency.

At the sentencing on Tuesday, Fitzhugh told the judge he takes responsibility for her death. Nelson said that given the suffering Decker endured the remorse rang “a little hollow.”
