WASHINGTON (AP) — A New Jersey congressman is calling for the Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate the New York Police Department’s intelligence division.
An Associated Press investigation recently revealed the existence of a secret NYPD team that mapped and monitored Muslim neighborhoods in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. Police documents obtained by the AP also revealed the department maintained a list 28 countries that, along with “American Black Muslim” it considered “ancestries of interest.”
In a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder this week, Holt says those activities could violate federal civil rights laws.
The Justice Department had no immediate comment on the request.
