PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The founders of Bob’s Red Mill Natural Foods are donating $25 million to combat junk food, “high-calorie malnutrition” and the results of unhealthy eating, such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
The Oregon Health & Science University and Bob and Charlee (chahr-lee) Moore said Friday the money will finance an institute to turn research into what they called “a powerful call to action for the public, policymakers and health care providers.”
The Milwaukie company was founded in 1978 and reflects the couple’s interests in whole grains and stone-mill grinding.
Last year, on his 81st birthday, Bob Moore said he would give the workers the company through an employee stock ownership plan. The company employs 230. Moore told The Oregonian (http://bit.ly/n5XuAZ ) he expects revenue this year to reach $120 million.
