US takes 6-2 lead in PGA Cup

SAN MARTIN, Calif. (AP) — The United States took a 6-2 lead Friday in the PGA Cup against Britain and Ireland, closing the afternoon foursomes with three straight 6-and-5 victories in the Ryder Cup-style event for club professionals.

PGA Professional champion David Hutsell of Baltimore teamed with Mark Sheftic of Blue Bell, Pa., for the first of the blowout victories at CordeValle.

Danny Balin of Greenwich, Conn., and Scott Erdmann of Tigard, Ore., won the next match, and Rob McClellan of Butler, Pa., and Marty Jertson of Phoenix took the third.

The United States led 212-112 after the morning fourball matches.
