TORONTO (AP) — Alex Rodriguez will miss his sixth straight game when the New York Yankees visit the Toronto Blue Jays. He is expected to return to the lineup Saturday.

Rodriguez hasn’t played since Sept. 9 because of a sprained left thumb, an injury that’s been hindering him since Aug. 21.

The Yankees third baseman hit in the cage again and took batting practice Friday for the first time since his last appearance. But manager Joe Girardi, who previously said Rodriguez likely would be back on Friday, decided to give his ailing slugger another day off.

Girardi says Rodriguez probably will start at third base Saturday against Blue Jays right-hander Henderson Alvarez.
