Elon holds off North Carolina Central 23-22

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) — Thomas Wilson threw for the game-winning touchdown and 416 yards in Elon’s 23-22 win over North Carolina Central on Saturday night.

Wilson, whose career high in yards also tied for 19th-best in Southern Conference history, had a 27-yard touchdown pass to Christian Dennis with 4:46 left to play.

Trailing 17-10, North Carolina Central (1-2) scored on an 18-yard TD from Michael Johnson to Geovonie Irvine but Oleg Parent missed the extra point. On Elon’s ensuing drive, Wilson threw an interception to Tiron Guion that was returned 75 yards for the score.

After Dennis’ TD, the Eagles were stopped on Elon’s 22 on third down. The snap on the field goal was bobbled and the Phoenix (2-1) took over on downs to seal it with 1:46 left.

Aaron Mellette also had a career day for the Phoenix (2-1), tallying 16 passes for a career-high 237 yards.
