NOME, Alaska (AP) — A salvage operation launched after a landing craft lost power and ended up on the rocks in the Nome channel has been completed.

The Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation says the Kaktovik II was attempting to retrieve a beached barge on Sept. 10 when winds and waves turned it broadside. A line got caught in the propeller, causing the vessel to lose power. It grounded and the port side fuel tank ruptured, spilling between 800 and 1,000 gallons of diesel fuel into the ocean.

DEC says the landing craft was towed and remaining fuels removed before it was hoisted and cleaned. A flyover of the area did not show any impacts from the fuel that was spilled.

The vessel is being barged to Seattle.
