ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Patrik Elias scored 45 seconds into overtime to lift the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 win over the New York Rangers in the preseason opener for both teams Wednesday night.

Set up by Zach Parise’s pass, Elias tapped the game-winner past Cam Talbot after the Rangers turned it over in their zone.

The Rangers didn’t manage a shot until 8:08 in the first period, but finally tied the game at 15:49 in the third.

Artem Anisimov sent the puck to Dale Weise from the corner, and Weise beat goalie Jeff Frazee from just in front of the left circle to tie it at 1-all.

Former New Jersey draft pick Petr Sykora — who shined here as a member of the AHL’s Albany River Rats in the mid-1990s — beat Henrik Lundqvist at 11:34 of the first period on a wrister from the right circle to put the Devils ahead 1-0.
