WASHINGTON (AP) — The No. 2 House Republican says the chamber will vote on a bill providing relief for victims of Hurricane Irene and other disasters and approving billions of dollars to keep the government functioning next week.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia told reporters that he expects the chamber to vote on the measure Thursday night.

On Wednesday, House GOP leaders were dealt an embarrassing defeat when a combination of Democrats and conservative Republicans rejected an earlier version of the bill. That measure contained $3.7 billion in disaster aid, plus enough money to keep the government functioning from the Oct. 1 start of the new fiscal year through Nov. 18.

Cantor would not say how the new bill would differ from the original measure.
