NEW YORK (AP) — Jenny Simpson returns to the United States as a world champion.
She hasn’t had much time to commemorate and contemplate becoming the first American woman since Mary Decker in 1983 to win the 1,500-meter title.
After her victory in Daegu, South Korea, on Sept. 1, Simpson had to hop on planes to Italy, Belgium and Morocco for races. She finally returned to the U.S. on Tuesday, flying into New York to run this weekend’s Fifth Avenue Mile.
It’s been quite a few weeks for the accidental miler. Simpson finished fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2009 worlds, but a leg injury last year kept her from training in what had been her specialty.
