Helped needed at Mt. St. Helens
Volunteers will meet at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Coldwater Visitors Center on the north side of Mount St. Helens for trail maintenance and other work as part of National Public Lands Day.
A continental breakfast will be provided by the Mount St. Helens Institute. The event will conclude with a barbeque, raffle and awards ceremony at 3:30 p.m.
Volunteers are urged to bring a water bottle, leather work gloves, sturdy boots, and long pants.

Forest garbage to get cleaned
CAMAS — Volunteers will clean illegal dump sites in the Yacolt Burn State Forest on Saturday as part of National Public Lands Day.
Organized by the Jones Creek Trail Riders Association, Pacific Northwest 4-Wheel Drive Association and Piston’s Wild Motorsports, the annual Pick Up the Burn event will start at 8 a.m. at Jones Creek trailhead.
Peter Goldmark, commissioner of public lands for Washington, will welcome the participants at 9 a.m.

Waterfowlers’ banquet Saturday
Hunting decoys, guns and other outdoor gear will be auctioned and raffled on Saturday at the annual banquet of the Lower Columbia chapter of the Washington Waterfowl Association.
The event begins at 6 p.m. at Club Green Meadows, 7703 N.E. 72nd Ave.
Tickets cost $35 per person or $65 for a couple. Tickets can be bought in advance from Doug Hargin at 360-903-6951.
Stevens Canyon road closed
ASHFORD — Stevens Canyon road at Mount Rainier National Park is closed from the Grove of the Patriarchs to Backbone Ridge viewpoint until spring for construction.
Visitors traveling between the east and west sides of the park will need to use Gifford Pinchot National Forest road No. 52 (Skate Creek) beginning in Packwood or the longer route via state Highway 7 in Morton and connecting with state Highway 706 at Elbe.
Visitors still will be able to access the trailheads on state highways 123 and 410 as well as the White River and Sunrise areas.
Sunrise Visitor Center is open through Sunday, when it closes for the season.
Campgrounds at Cougar Rock and Ohanapecosh will be open through Oct. 10. White River camp will close for the season on Sunday.
