UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The president of the U.N. Security Council says the powerful body will meet on Monday to examine the Palestinian application for membership in the world organization.

Nawaf Salam made the announcement Friday, just a few hours after Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas submitted the membership request to U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon.

A Security Council decision on the request was not expected for weeks or perhaps months.
