MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — For the fourth straight September, Jackson County’s largest reservoir has been the host of a blue-green algae bloom deemed dangerous to people and pets.

The Medford Mail Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/mVCSxy ) water samples show bacteria levels far above the amount deemed safe for exposure. The bacteria can produce toxins that cause illness or even death.

Deadly toxic levels have never been found in Oregon, but public health officials still treat the blue-green algae as a health risk.

Two dogs have died after contact with blue-green algae in the past two years.
