JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash. (AP) — An Army Ranger from Joint Base Lewis-McChord died Saturday in Afghanistan.

The Defense Department says 22-year-old Sgt. Tyler N. Holtz of Dana Point, Calif., died of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms fire.

He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment.

The News Tribune reports he was on his fourth deployment to Afghanistan.

A news release from the Special Operations Command says he died while leading his men in combat.

Holtz joined the Army in October 2007 after he graduated from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, Calif.

Holtz is survived by his father, Andrew Holtz of Capistrano Beach, Calif.; his mother, Karen Holtz, and his three brothers, all of Dana Point, Calif.
