Cipolla beats Tomic at Malaysian Open

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — Flavio Cipolla of Italy beat Australian teenager Bernard Tomic 6-2, 6-2 Wednesday in the first round of the Malaysian Open.

The 96th-ranked Cipolla saved five of six break points to beat the Wimbledon quarterfinalist in 72 minutes at Kuala Lumpur’s Putra Stadium. The 18-year-old Tomic became the youngest player since 1986 to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals this year.

Also, Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan beat Marinko Matosevic of Australia 6-3, 6-2.
