PATERSON, N.J. (AP) — Dickie V. is being honored in his home state.
Dick Vitale, the ESPN analyst since the network began in 1979 and 2008 inductee into Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame, will be honored Friday night at a new event attempting to expand the reach of the V Foundation.
Vitale, who coached at East Rutherford H.S. and Rutgers University in his home state, is one of the leading fundraisers for the V Foundation, which was founded in 1993 by ESPN and the late Jim Valvano and has raised more than $100 million for cancer research.
The dinner will be hosted by ESPN’s Bob Ley, with Notre Dame coach Mike Brey as the guest speaker.
Vitale will also be honored Dec. 5, when the University of Detroit, where he coached from 1973-77, will rename their court after him.
