Federal dollars to upgrade Portland rail station

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Oregon Department of Transportation has been granted $13.6 million for a modernization project of Portland’s Union Station, along with other railway upgrades.

KPTV-TV reports (http://bit.ly/naavSk ) the money from the U.S. Transportation Department will fund facility upgrades at Union Station, a roof replacement, seismic upgrades and energy conservation measures.

The money will also go toward identifying improvements along Amtrak’s Eugene-to-Portland route.

Ridership on the overall Cascades route, which runs from Eugene to Vancouver, B.C., increased by 10 percent last year, setting a record for the route.
