SEATTLE (AP) — The King County Council has appointed Steve Strachan as county sheriff.

He became interim sheriff when Sue Rahr left the job March 31 to become director of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission. Strachan was her chief deputy.

The council is responsible for appointing a new sheriff until the vacancy has been filled at the next general election in November.

Strachan previously served five years as police chief in the south Seattle suburb of Kent.
