ATHENS, Greece (AP) — The governing board of the Greece’s track and field federation has suspended all athletic operations after an emergency meeting.

A text of Wednesday’s decision seen by The Associated Press says the suspension is indefinite. It has the immediate effect of halting all domestic competitions.

On Tuesday, federation president Vassilis Sevastis told the AP the body was considering the suspension due to deep cuts in state funding in the financially strapped country. He said coaching staff and suppliers had not been paid for months due to budget reductions.

The suspension comes a month before Greece holds the Olympic flame lighting ceremony in Ancient Olympia for the 2012 London Games.
