Letter: Exemption problem is ignored

In response to her March 29 letter, “Tax exemptions badly abused,” I must agree with Roberta Upson about the way the problem of Oregonians not paying sales tax is being handled.

I have been sending letters to various departments and leaders over many years, including the governor, with no response. The best way they have found is to protect the cheaters and raise our auto registrations and sales tax and sweep the real problem under the rug.

Until someone comes along with an idea and the backbone to do something about this problem and look out for the honest taxpayer, nothing is going to be done.

At the same time this state is looking for ways to cut our budget, we are being cheated out of millions when the sales clerk asks, “Are you a Washington resident?” It’s just not fair.
