KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — A suicide bomber blew himself up outside a store in northeastern Afghanistan, killing two people and wounding 16.

Shah Waliullah Adeeb, the governor of Badakhshan, says the explosion occurred Thursday in Kishim district.

He says the bomber was targeting Nazok Mir, an area elder who commanded Afghan fighters against the Soviets in the 1980s. Insurgents killed Mir’s brother last year.

Insurgents target leading figures in the north to eliminate opposition to the Taliban, which has its strongholds in the south.
