ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Ian Kinsler and the Texas Rangers were unable to reach an agreement on a long-term contract before opening day.
Kinsler has long had a self-imposed deadline of Friday’s opener to negotiate, and the second baseman says he’s now focused on playing.
In the clubhouse before the opener against the Chicago White Sox, Kinsler said the sides were close enough to be disappointed that a deal wasn’t done after talks this spring between the Rangers and his agent, Jay Franklin.
Kinsler is scheduled to make $7 million this season and there is a $10 million club option for next season.
