MORTLAKE, England (AP) — The race between Oxford and Cambridge crew teams has been suspended with about a mile and a half remaining after a protester jumped into the River Thames.

The crews narrowly avoided hitting the man, who appeared to duck below the oars before the coxes of both boats stopped racing.

The race will be restarted from the halfway point from the Hammersmith Bridge.

Oxford was slightly ahead at the time, with the crews approaching the start of the Surrey bend about four minutes from the finish line.

The last time the race had to be restarted was in 2001 when there was a clash of blades.
