PORT ANGELES, Wash. (AP) — Artifacts from Washington state’s Elwha River dams will be put on display at visitor centers across the West later this year.
The two decades-old dams are being torn down as part of a $325 million federal project to restore the Elwha River’s ecosystem and its once-famous salmon runs.
Some of the equipment from the dams will go to local museums. The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation plans to put other equipment pieces at four visitor centers at Grand Coulee Dam in Eastern Washington, Hoover Dam in Nevada, Mount Elbert Forebay Dam in Colorado and Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona.
The Peninsula Daily News reports (http://bit.ly/I6JfMi ) the artifacts are part of the nation’s hydroelectric power history.
