Eugene tries to compost commercial food waste

EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The city of Eugene has now got four months of experience in setting up a composting system for commercial food waste.

The biggest difficulty so far is sorting the material that’s biodegradable to make compost from the stuff that won’t break down.

Officials say that many restaurants and food producers have got the hang of it, and they’re working with others who are having sorting issues.

The program is voluntary and subsidized by a rate increase for commercial waste.

City officials say it can cut a waste bill for a business, but it’s started small.

The Eugene Register-Guard says results so far suggest it’s unlikely to meet a first-year goal of diverting about a third of the commercial food waste that would normally go to the landfill.
