HOUSTON (AP) — Former champion Tommy Haas withdrew with a right knee injury Monday before his first-round match in the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships.

Haas won the tournament in 2004. He warmed up for his match against Go Soeda of Japan at River Oaks Country Club before deciding he could not continue.

Top-seeded Mardy Fish, who withdrew from Davis Cup play last week following what he called a health scare, has a bye into the second round and will play his first match Thursday.
