Marty, Switzerland handle Russia, 5-2, at Worlds

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Stefanie Marty scored twice and Florence Schelling made 32 saves to lift Switzerland to a 5-2 win over Russia in the quarterfinal round of the 2012 Women’s World Ice Hockey Championship Wednesday.

The Swiss advance to the semifinal round, where they will face the United States Friday at 7 p.m.

After Tatyana Burina opened the scoring for Russia 2:24 into the first period, Stefanie Marty tied it with a power play goal at 16:15. Phoebe Stanz gave the Swiss the lead for good with 26 seconds left in the period.

Julia Marty, Evelina Rasilla and Stefanie Marty added goals for Switzerland in the second while Burina tallied her second of the game for Russia. Schelling stopped all 13 shots in the third.

Switzerland is in the semifinals for the first time since 2007.
